In today’s world, where kids encounter all kinds of different perspectives and experiences, helping them grow up with kindness, empathy, and understanding has never been more important. The Learn Together curriculum in Educate Together schools does exactly that—it gives students the tools to see and appreciate the unique qualities in everyone around them, fostering a sense of belonging and respect. Through Learn Together, children develop a strong foundation in values like fairness, equality, and compassion. They learn that their voices matter and that they can make a real difference, no matter how young they are. It’s amazing to see kids realise that they don’t have to wait until they’re adults to contribute positively to their communities—they can start right here, right now. I was lucky enough to work in schools with varying school ethos’ during my first few years of teaching and learned so much from each school, ethos, and team. One thing that I really liked about teaching in a Community National School was exploring the GMGY curriculum (an ethical ed. curriculum used as the patronage/ethos-related subject area within CNS schools) and getting my first taste of multidenominational education. One specific aspect that I continue to take some inspiration from is their Family Projects aspect of the curriculum. I think this is a methodology and idea that can be adapted for all schools to help promote respectful dialogue, a sense of community, oral language/show and tell, empathy, mutual understanding and celebrating diversity. Here’s a photo of one family project I created and have used in classrooms since moving to a different school and different ethos. It’s perfect for SPHE, SESE, oral language, religion, GMGY and/or Learn Together and is a lovely way to share a bit more about our identities and family celebrations/traditions. Our next Investigation Area is all set up and ready to go. This time, our tuff tray has a literacy focus with lots of different word building opportunities. The word train is getting lots of attention and interest already so it’ll be interesting to see what the kids get up to at the Investigation Area over the next 3 weeks. I generally change the tuff tray set up every 3 or 4 weeks, with a new focus and different resources. In September we had a fine motor focus in the tuff tray and a maths focus for October. I think this is a really important message to keep at the forefront of inclusive education. To be inclusive is not to change people or try to change them, it is about changing attitudes. Respectful and open conversations, building understanding, appreciation and empathy, and a shared goal of making the community a better place for all are key to inclusion. It’s about recognising that everyone deserves to be fully seen, heard and supported, and understanding that no one person can make this happen by themself, as it is not possible for one person to fully understand the unique perspectives each person or community can bring to a given moment/decision/topic. It is about always being open to listening and learning. It is about working together to create a space for each and every person that meets their needs (physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, self-actualisation etc) to the fullest.
