In September 2016, I was teaching a self portraits art lesson in my Third Class classroom. After finishing the drawing stage of the lesson, I was walking around the room as the children coloured in their portraits and something caught my eye; one child was colouring their face in their self portrait with a blue crayon. I complimented their beautiful artwork and curiously asked about their colour choice. The child’s response struck me. They explained that the ‘skin colour’ crayon (pointing at the peach one in their pencil case) didn’t look like them and they had come to the conclusion that their blue crayon was a closer match. This moment and conversation will always stick with me. Every September since then, I’m reminded of that blue self-portrait.

Printing some more desk nametags today from @twinkl_ireland as I have two new children joining my class tomorrow. I like these ones for Infants classes as they are really clear, have a cursive alphabet along the bottom with both the upper and lower case, and the basic number line with colour coded odd and even numbers. I use Velcro to attach them to the tables so the kids can easily take them off to look closer at them or use them for specific lessons/activities. It also helps with keeping them attached to the table while also allowing for easy swaps when the kids move seats.

This might be one of my favourite books to read to the smallies. It tells the story of the big bad wolf getting tired of huffing and puffing to blow houses down, so he decides to try join a different fairytale instead. Each page of the book depicts a different fairytale and what happens when the wolf joins it. Cue lots of silliness and giggles from the kids! 🤩😂
